Documents the first exhibition to specifically assess the impact on early 20th-century American art of renowned author Stein (1874-1946) and her extensive Paris collection of avant-garde works by Picasso, Matisse, Braque and other major European painters. Presenting some 60 diverse figurative and abstract works (chiefly paintings) by 31 artists, among them Davies, Coburn, Demuth, Glackens, Kuhn, Hartley, Russell, Weber, Sheeler and Stella, the catalogue offers a substantial essay tracing Stein's activities as a patron and detailing her role in introducing visiting American artists to new Modernist styles.
