Presenting a selection of 60 drawings, paintings and mixed-media compositions spanning the career of innovative American artist Rivers (b. 1923), this chiefly pictorial catalogue juxtaposes his narrative history paintings, reinterpretations of famous canvases and manipulations of popular imagery with "private" works, including self-portraits and studies of his family and friends. An introductory essay by Sam Hunter (adapted from his 1989 monograph on the artist) provides an overview of Rivers' development, addressing his exploration of various styles and themes and discussing his significant role in the artistic transitions of the 1960s.
