First published in 1981 as Harlem Document: Photographs, 1932-1940, this book was reissued to accompany an exhibition of 60 black-and-white images of life in the New York neighborhood by noted photographer Siskind (1903-1991). A new introductory essay discussing the works in the context of the artist's career supplements the text of the original edition, which includes eight oral histories of Harlem residents collected by Ralph Ellison and other members of the Federal Writers' Project.
