SERGEL. Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 1990. 320 pp. with 389 ills. (15 col.). 22 x 18 cm. LC 91-210812 ISBN 9171003908 In Swedish, with English summaries.
An extensive survey of works by major Swedish Neoclassical artist Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814), this catalogue illustrates more than 200 drawings -- expressive sketches and caricatures of court life in Stockholm and interpretations of classical subjects -- along with some 50 marble sculptures and terracotta models, among them portraits, public monuments and the artist's celebrated depictions of mythological figures. Substantial texts examine Sergel's career from his long sojourn in Rome through his years as court sculptor to Gustav III, and discuss such topics as the melding of classical and Christian motifs in his art.
