A highly detailed history of approaches to architecture and urban planning in Reggio Emilia, Milan, Bologna, Modena, Parma and Piacenza from the late 1700s through the Risorgimento, this catalogue documents more than 300 architectural drawings and topographical prints, providing scholarly commentaries on most of the works and biographies of some 50 architects. Twelve essays discuss such topics as the centralization of civic planning during the Napoleonic era, the changing methods of training architects and engineers over the period, and the efforts of many of the architects represented to establish a national style.
