ROD RHODES: INSITES. Tom Finkelpearl et al. Institute for Contemporary Art, Clocktower Gallery, New York, 1989. 64 pp. with 46 ills. (8 col.). 23 x 23 cm. In English.
Illustrates some 20 free-standing and wall-mounted sculptural assemblages produced in the 1980s by American artist Rhodes (b. 1944), chiefly comprising small cubical and cruciform boxes faced with wire-mesh glass and housing miniature architectural and theatrical tableaux which merge Christian, homoerotic, classical and industrial imagery. Featuring an insightful interview with Rhodes, the catalogue includes a critical discussion of his oeuvre and an examination of a recent series of 14 works entitled Stations of the Cross, which incorporates highly personalized iconography reflecting the artist's struggle with AIDS.
