Presenting illustrations and scholarly descriptions of 46 gouaches by Jean-Pierre-Laurent Houel (1735-1813) from the Louvre collection, this catalogue documents a series of the French artist's best-known works, later published in a popular book of engravings. Comprised of studies of the Sicilian countryside and many views of ancient ruins, the works are distinguished by a naturalism and subtle treatment of light unusual in French landscape art of the period.
