SOUS LES PAVES, LA BASTILLE: ARCHEOLOGIE D'UN MYTHE REVOLUTIONNAIRE (Beneath the Paving, the Bastille: Archaeology of a Revolutionary Myth). Hotel de Sully, Paris, 1989. Organized and published by Caisse nationale des Monuments historiques et des Sites, Paris. 174 pp. with 210 ills. (11 col.). 26 x 24 cm. ISBN 2858220867 In French.
Well illustrated with topographical prints, architectural drawings, maps and photographs, this scholarly catalogue includes 17 essays extensively chronicling the history of the Bastille, from its construction in the 14th century as a defensive fortress to its use as a prison in the early 1600s and its destruction in 1789 at the outset of the Revolution. In addition to discussing the structure's significance as a symbol of the monarchy and ultimately of repression, the texts also examine its architectural relationship to other medieval fortresses and to French Gothic chateaux, and the projects proposed for the site in the post-Revolution period.
