ERIC BAINBRIDGE: STYLE, SPACE, ELEGANCE. Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1989. Organized in association with Salvatore Ala Gallery, New York. 48 pp. with 32 ills. (25 col.). 29 x 24 cm. Bilingual in Dutch and English.
Surveys some 20 recent works by British artist Bainbridge (b. 1955), whose large plaster and chicken-wire models of everyday objects, covered in fake fur, embody allusive narratives and commentaries on modern art and life. Discussing Bainbridge's use of unusual materials and oversized, kitsch-like totemic forms as thematic devices and as critiques of the monolithic tone of modern sculpture, the introductory essay establishes links and distinctions between the artist and such figures as Oldenburg and Beuys.
