DANI KARAVAN: DIALOG -- DUSSELDORF/DUISBURG (Dani Karavan: Dialogue -- Dusseldorf/Duisburg). Kunstsammlung Nordrhein- Westfalen, Dusseldorf, and Wilhelm-Lehmbruck-Museum, Duisburg, 1989. 112 pp. with 50 ills. (36 col.). 29 x 24 cm. ISBN 3926154063 Bilingual in German and English.
Highlights two sculptural pieces created in 1989 by noted Israeli artist Karavan (b. 1930): a large white concrete platform surmounted by six cubes, produced for the sculpture garden of the Duisburg museum, and a full-sized reconstruction of a section of railroad track, installed in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Including full-page photographs of the two projects and of some 20 earlier works by Karavan, many of them architectonic, site-specific sculptures bearing affinities to both Minimal and Environmental art, the catalogue provides individual discussions of the origins and meanings of the featured pieces and two essays on the themes of nature and history that figure prominently in the artist's work.
