GROSSER AUFTRITT: MODE DER RINGSTRASSENZEIT (High Stepping: Fashion from the Era of the Ringstrasse). Ed. by Regina Karner and Michaela Lindinger. Wien Museum, Vienna, 2009. Published in association with Christian Brandstatter Verlag, Vienna. 184 pp., lavishly illustrated. 30 x 23 cm. ISBN 9783850333337 In German.
Vienna's Ringstrasse, a broad, circular avenue that came to replace the medieval walls surrounding the old portion of the city, was intended, with its many opulent public and private buildings, to be the showcase for the grandeur and glory of the Habsburg Empire, and to provide a stage for Austrian high society to make its grand appearances. This well-illustrated volume documents the most important fashion trends of the era (construction of the avenue and its buildings lasted between 1854 and 1913) and offers images of a wide variety of male and female attire and accessories, in both full-page color photographs featuring actual items and in reproductions of advertisements from the period. Volume and dust jacket are in very good condition.
