RECUEIL MARIGNY: PROJETS POUR LA PLACE DE LA CONCORDE, 1753 (The Marigny Collection: Projects for La Place de la Concorde, 1753). Jorg Garms. Musee Carnavalet, Paris, 2002. Published by Paris-Musees. 104 pp. with 69 col. ills. and 6 fold-out color plates. 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 2879007445 In French.
In 1753, the 19 projects that resulted from a competition for the creation of a public space to showcase an equestrian statue of Louis XV were presented to the king. This collection brings together a copy of each, together with the commentary of the Marquis de Marigny, the then superintendant of royal buildings. This collection is the sole testimony of the genesis of the Place de la Concorde. This catalogue presents a historical study of the original work, as well as detailed commentary on each project. The study of these plans becomes even more necessary given that the initial design by Anges-Jacques Gabriel was modified several times at the insistence of the king, who desired to bring about a synthesis of the best elements of several projects. Both volume and detachable stiff wrappers are in very good condition.
