TEORIA DA FALA/THEORY OF SPEECH: PEDRO BARATEIRO. Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Serralves, 2009. 124 pp. with numerous ills. 30 x 20 cm. ISBN 9789727392223 Bilingual in Portuguese and English.
Barateiro is the Portuguese artist who has resorted most to archive images, especially to propaganda films commissioned by the Estado Novo (as the 1928-1974 Portuguese totalitarian regime was known) showing works of engineering and architecture, pedagogical exhibitions or the daily life in the former Portuguese colonies. He is one of the most attentive to the way in which documents, artifacts and art objects were presented throughout the 20th century, and his interest extends to the ways in which the western world presented and assimilated other cultures. For Serralves he has developed a projected that is linked to the construction of the Serralves Villa and its meaning in terms of social representation, relationship with colonialism, taste for the exotic as it prevailed in the twenties and thirties, as well as the violent and utopian industrial past that provided the ideological and financial backbone to a whole concept of luxury, especially the refinements of French Art Deco. Volume is in very good condition.
