MICHAELA MELIAN: FOHRENWALD. Ed. by Heike Ander and Michaela Melian. Kunstraum Muenchen, Munich, 2005. Published by Revolver Archiv fur aktuelle Kunst, Frankfurt am Main. 282 pages with numerous ills. and audio CD. 23 x 17 cm. ISBN 3865881858 Bilingual in German and English.
Fohrenwald was built at the end of the 1930s as a model housing development with a capacity for 4,500 inhabitants, used as a camp for forced laborers in the arms industry during the war, and afterwards for more than ten years as an extraterritorial housing development for Jewish displaced persons. Finally, when the self-administered camp was closed, German refugees from Eastern Europe with large families were settled there from 1956 onward. This catalogue documents the story of the eponymous housing development (now known as Waldram) in the form of a multimedia installation. For the public exhibition a walk-in, cylindrical house was built; it was designed to be temporary like a mobile building, with rotating panoramic slide projection inside that showed the development in drawings with white lines against a black background. The accompanying soundtrack of music and voices was made especially for the installation and describes various phases in the development's history. The installation was accompanied by an exhibition in the kunstraum muenchen. Volume is in fine condition.
