Expanding on previous research undertaken for a 2002 Spanish exhibition titled "El Westmorland: Recuerdos del Grand Tour" (see Worldwide 29017), a show that similarly explored the fate of cargo from the Westmorland, a British merchant ship that was captured by the Spanish in 1779 while en route from Italy to Great Britain, this volume compiles a more extensive inventory of the ship's contents -- which included paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, maps, books and other objects collected by young British travelers while on the Grand Tour -- and adds considerable depth to the story, analyzing the historical events in the context of the cultural phenomenon of the Grand Tour, identifying artists, makers, original owners and provenance, tracing the works after they were seized by the Spanish, and providing scholarly catalogue entries documenting and describing some 140 items from "the English Prize" that were reunited for the exhibition.
