Documents an exhibition that reassembled nearly 200 works from the spectactular collections amassed by Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) for the decoration of his chateau at Richelieu in Touraine, including several paintings by Nicolas Prevost (1603/1604-1670), a French painter at the court of Louis XIII; canvases by such figures as Caravaggio, Mantegna, Poussin and Vignon; and Roman statuary, tapestries and other diverse works. The catalogue also examines the architecture and gardens of the chateau itself, which was destroyed in the early 19th century.
