Accompanying an ambitious exhibition that centered upon the 19 surviving large-scale grisaille canvases painted by Florentine artists close to the Medici as decorative tableaux to temporarily line the walls of the San Lorenzo church in Florence for a special funeral service honoring King Henry IV of France (1553-1610) that was held just four months after his assassination, this catalogue carefully considers the diplomatic and political aspects of the event, arranged by the young Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621), cousin of French Queen Marie de' Medici, and discusses the significance and artistic legacy of the works, which depict various events in the life of the recently deceased monarch.
