KATSURA: PICTURING MODERNISM IN JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE -- PHOTOGRAPHS BY ISHIMOTO YASUHIRO. Yasufumi Nakamori. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2010. Distributed by Yale University Press, New Haven. 168 pp. with 144 ills. (24 col.). 28 x 28 cm. LC 2009-48459 ISBN 9780300163339 In English.
Published 50 years after the landmark publication Katsura: Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture (Yale University Press, 1960), this volume revisits the influential book that featured images by Japanese American photographer Yasuhiro (b. 1921) depicting details of the 17th-century Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto from a modernist perspective along with texts by architects Walter Gropius and Tange Kenzo, who collaborated on the project; includes many images that were either cropped by Tange in the original edition or omitted altogether because they were perceived as not supporting the modernist theories being advanced.
