GOYA, CRONISTA DE TODAS LAS GUERRAS: LOS DESASTRES Y LA FOTOGRAFIA DE LA GUERRA (Goya, Chronicler of All Wars: The Disasters and War Photography). Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 2009. Organized in association with Calcografia Nacional, Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. 246 pp. with 174 ills. (169 col.). 28 x 25 cm. ISBN 9788492579013 Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Although the catalogue section of this volume only documents prints from Goya's celebrated Disasters of War series (1810-1820) -- illustrated in many cases alongside reproductions of preparatory drawings -- the exhibition itself included war photographs by such 20th-century figures as Eugene Smith, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, a theme that is explored in two essays examining the ways in which Goya's work anticipated war photography of later periods and assessing the role of photojournalism in raising public awareness of the horrors of war.
