Examines the significance and influence of Documents, a radical Surrealist journal published in Paris in 1929 and 1930 by French philosopher and novelist Georges Bataille (1897-1962) as a direct challenge to "mainstream" Surrealism as championed by Andre Breton, presenting five scholarly essays along with scores of illustrations of artifacts, art works and ephemera that appeared in the journal's wide-ranging articles on art, archaeology, ethnography and popular culture, including works by such major figures as Picasso, Masson, Miro, Arp and Brancusi.
