Documenting an exhibition titled The Teacher and the Student: Charles Rosenthal and Ilya Kabakov, this catalogue explores diverse trends in 20th-century Russian art as well as the nature of museum retrospectives through a presentation of both abstract and representational paintings and drawings produced by Russian expatriate artist Ilya Kabakov (b. 1933) as the creations of two fictitious Russian artists: Charles Rosenthal, an early 20th-century figure who sought to integrate abstraction with Soviet-style realism, and Igor Spivak, a contemporary painter whose monochromatic canvases pay ironic homage to Socialist Realist themes.
