Surveying 20th-century images from the vast collection of photographs assembled by Gernsheim (1913-1995), a German photographer and scholar whose critical writings played a key role in establishing photography as an autonomous artistic medium, this catalogue features eight introductory essays along with reproductions and individual discussions of more than 100 works produced chiefly since 1945, including portraits and other images by such prominent international figures as Cartier-Bresson, Halsman, Jacobi, Karsh, Michals, Morath, Sander and Steinert. Available copy shows bump to foot of spine, with small tear at bottom of rear gutter. Tips of lower outside corners of covers show light wear. Volume is otherwise in very good condition.
