Highlighting photographs, sculptures and other pieces from the collection of Ydessa Hendeles (b. 1948), a German-born Canadian artist and curator who founded the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation in Toronto, this catalogue accompanies an exhibition designed to explore issues surrounding modern German history and Hendeles's Jewish heritage through a presentation of works by such artists as Walker Evans, Paul McCarthy, On Kawara, Jeff Wall and Hanne Darboven, while also showcasing Hendeles's own recent installation Partners (The Teddy Bear Project), a vast "curiosity cabinet" featuring glass vitrines, teddy bears, documents and a collection of more than 3000 chiefly early 20th-century family-album photographs, each including an image of a bear.
