Reproducing the nearly 200 lithographic prints of drawings that comprised the Drawing Course (Cours de dessin), a legendary publication compiled in the 1860s by French painters Bargue and Gerome as an entirely pictorial instructional manual for drawing students, this book includes an introductory text, commentaries on the illustrated works (master drawings and studies of plaster casts and live models), an essay detailing the life and career of the long-neglected Bargue (1826/27-1883) and an illustrated catalogue raisonne of his known paintings. Hardcover edition is out of print.
