Although not specifically documenting the exhibition, this volume is published to coincide with a show at Hermitage Rooms at Somerset House, London, titled Painting, Passion and Politics: Masterpieces from the Walpole Collection (September 2002-February 2003), which featured 34 Old Master works on loan from the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. The publication thoroughly documents for the first time the entire collection of Britain's first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745), and examines the circumstances surrounding the sale of this important collection in 1799 to Empress Catherine II of Russia.
