Surveying the independent oeuvre of a prominent French painter best known for his wryly observant portrayals of fashionable Victorian society, this catalogue presents more than 50 oils and gouaches and some 40 prints produced by Tissot (1836-1902) over the course of his career in Paris and London, the selection including treatments of biblical subjects as well as many often emotionally charged portraits and narrative images of modern life. Fine reproductions and individual discussions of the featured pieces are prefaced by an essay examining the social, psychological and aesthetic concerns informing Tissot's work.
