CONRAD MARCA-RELLI. Ed. by Luca Massimo Barbero. Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, 1998. Published in association with Electa, Milan. Distributed in the U.S.A. by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 188 pp. with 129 ills. (44 col.). 28 x 31 cm. In English.
Surveying the career of a noted American Abstract Expressionist whose oeuvre consists primarily of innovative collage tableaux composed of painted canvas cut-outs attached to canvas panels, this catalogue presents some 60 "painting-collages" along with a small selection of sculptures and reliefs produced by Marca-Relli (b. 1913) from 1953 to 1995. A substantial critical anthology and a discussion of Marca-Relli's stylistic development based on interviews with the artist accompany fine full-page reproductions of the featured works, which include many earth-toned collages incorporating images of abstracted human figures or evocative patterns of interlocking biomorphic forms.
