Reviewing the career and provocative oeuvre of a Paris-based Italian artist best known for her body-art pieces of the 1970s, this catalogue features photographic documentation of some 40 diverse works by Pane (1939-1990) that include environmental actions involving the displacement and reconfiguration of stones, soil and other materials, evocative metal panels embossed with skeletal figures, and performances centered on ritualistic acts of self-mutilation. Four critical essays (two reprinted) illuminate the chiefly spiritual and existential concerns informing Pane's artistic treatment of themes of suffering, death and redemption.
