An informal association of French artists active during the late 1960s and early 70s, the Supports/Surfaces group responded to Conceptual art and other avant-garde movements of the period by reasserting the structural and material foundations of artistic expression, their aesthetic theories based on deconstructivist principles, semiotic analysis and radical political ideals. This catalogue documents some 60 paintings and sculptural pieces produced by 16 members of the group, among them Daniel Dezeuze, Claude Viallat, Patrick Saytour, Louis Cane and Christian Jaccard. A detailed chronology of the Supports/Surfaces movement, two essays discussing the group's formal and philosophical concerns, and an interview with critic Marcelin Pleynet accompany fine illustrations and individual examinations of the exhibited works, which range from simple geometric abstract paintings and grid-patterned compositions to sculptural configurations of tree branches or rolls of fabric.
