Illuminating the significance of the human voice as metaphor and material in contemporary art, this catalogue features pictorial and textual documentation of more than 30 mixed-media installations, videos, films, performances and photo-based pieces produced from 1970 to 1998 by ten international artists who employ innovative mixtures of verbal and visual imagery to address a broad range of social, cultural and existential themes. Three essays discuss the emotive and symbolic qualities of speech and singing, examine recent sound-based art in a historical context, and assess the central role of the voice in Acconci's video and performance work of the 1970s.
