The first substantial study of the oeuvre of German painter Exter (1863-1939), a member of the Munich Secession, this catalogue presents four essays examining the artist's life and work along with excellent reproductions of more than 160 canvases and works on paper dating from the 1880s to the 1930s, the pieces ranging from Symbolist-inspired treatments of religious subjects to vibrant, richly impastoed landscapes, portraits and nudes reflecting the influence of Post-Impressionism and German Expressionism.
