Extensively surveying the distinctive figurative oeuvre of a prominent Spanish artist who has spent much of his career in Paris, this catalogue presents five critical essays, reproductions of more than 160 paintings, drawings, sculptures, reliefs, collages and ceramic pieces produced by Arroyo (b. 1937) from 1962 to 1997, and pictorial documentation of set and costume designs for some 20 theatrical productions, the works ranging from portraits of historical figures and abstacted heads composed of found objects to enigmatic, often darkly satirical narrative images reflecting such diverse influences as Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop art.
