RAINER KRIESTER: SCULTURE/SKULPTUREN/SCULPTURES. Museum Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen, 1998. Organized in association with Stadtische Museen, Heilbronn et al. Published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH, Munich. 296 pp. with 266 ills. (16 col.). 32 x 25 cm. ISBN 3777478709 Trilingual in Italian, German and English.
Showcases some 150 works in stone, bronze, iron and wood produced chiefly in the 1990s by German sculptor Kriester (b. 1935), whose oeuvre consists largely of stylized heads, monolithic stele forms and totemic figures that evoke the monuments of ancient cultures, their surfaces often engraved with geometric designs, numbers or calligraphic texts. Excellent photographs of the featured sculptures (many of them illustrated in situ at Kriester's hilltop work site in Italy) are accompanied by an interview in which the artist discusses his working methods and five critical essays exploring the philosophical, spiritual and aesthetic concerns embodied in his enigmatic imagery.
