Extensively surveying the visual oeuvre of a French painter and writer hailed by Jean Dubuffet as the prototypical Art Brut artist, this catalogue showcases more than 225 drawings, gouaches, oils, collages and sculptural objects produced by Chaissac fom 1936 to 1964, the selection including brightly hued organic abstractions as well as many childlike renderings of often grotesquely distorted human figures. A substantial biographical text and a selection of Chaissac's letters augment five essays that include a critical overview of the artist's career, a discussion of his literary work and an examination of his associations with Corneille, Alechinsky and other avant-garde Belgian painters of the early postwar period.
