Thoroughly reviewing the career of Italian sculptor Penone (b. 1947), a leading proponent of the Arte Povera aesthetic whose enigmatic works often explore interrelationships between the human body and nature, this catalogue illustrates some 90 sculptures, installations and drawings dating from 1968 to 1996 that range from bronze castings of anthropomorphic forms to site-specific environmental pieces in which photographs of the artist's face are hung in the branches of trees. An extensive selection of Penone's poetic commentaries on his work supplement two critical essays examining the psychological and metaphorical dimensions of his oeuvre.
