OP LYGIA CLARK. Fundacio Antoni Tapies, Barcelona, 1997. Published 1998. Organized in association with MAC, Galeries contemporaines des Musees de Marseille et al. 368 pp. with 363 ills. (29 col.). 30 x 24 cm. ISBN 8488786204 Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Presenting a thorough review of the career of an internationally acclaimed Brazilian artist whose experimental oeuvre encompasses painting, sculpture, body art and performance, this substantial catalogue illustrates more than 150 diverse works produced by Clark (1920-1988) from 1952 to 1975, including geometric abstract paintings and reliefs, kinetic metal constructions composed of angular hinged plates, "vestiary" soft sculptures designed to be "worn" by the spectator and communal environments in which groups of participants explore the sensual interplay between themselves and a broad range of objects and materials. An extensive selection of Clark's writings (many of them previously unpublished) augment three critical essays discussing the metaphorical and existential dimensions of the artist's work and examining her oeuvre in the context of avant-garde trends in postwar Brazilian and European art. Please note that an edition in French and Portuguese is available (see Worldwide 900359).
