Surveying the career of a noted German Jugenstil artist and designer whose studies of idyllic fairy tale scenes, portraits and landscapes reflect the lyrical approach to nature cultivated by the turn-of-the-century Worpswede group, this catalogue presents some 150 paintings, drawings, book illustrations, prints, interior designs and decorative objects produced by Vogeler (1872-1942) from the early 1890s to the early 1910s as well as some 25 diverse works by such contemporaries of the artist as Aubrey Beardsley, Otto Eckmann, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Henry van de Velde and Joseph Maria Olbrich. Ten essays include discussions of Vogeler's painted oeuvre, his techniques as an illustrator and printmaker, his designs for the applied arts and his depictions of his Barkenhoff house and gardens in Worpswede.
