Thoroughly reviewing the brief but prolific career of a well-known Italian artist whose provocative oeuvre anticipated such avant-garde currents of the 1960s and 70s as Conceptualism and Arte Povera, this catalogue presents good illustrations of more than 150 works produced by Manzoni (1933-1963) from 1957 to 1963, including monochromatic paintings and mixed-media canvases, reliefs composed of cotton balls, bread rolls and other diverse materials, examples of the artist's famous labeled cans of his own excrement and sealed cardboard tubes containing rolls of paper on which continuous lines were drawn. A selection of excerpts from Manzoni's writings supplements an extensive biographical text and two essays exploring the metaphysical dimensions of the artist's work and assessing the impact of his innovative concepts and techniques on contemporary art.
