Reviewing the singular collaborative oeuvre of two American artists whose works reflect their preoccupation with the historical past, this catalogue presents an essay by David McDermott (b. 1952) and Peter McGough (b. 1958), two critical texts and excellent reproductions of more than 100 paintings and some 55 photographs produced by the artists from 1984 to 1997, many of the often densely layered narrative images, portraits, textual compositions and other pieces appropriating the subject matter and style of American popular art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to create ironic commentaries on sexuality, religion and cultural history.
