Providing a substantial survey of works by European outsider artists, this catalogue highlights more than 200 diverse drawings, paintings and sculptural objects produced from the turn of the century to the 1990s by Adolf Wolfli, Aloise Corbaz, Scottie Wilson, Johann Hauser, Louis Soutter, and dozens of other self-taught figures, many of whom created their visionary, often highly expressionistic images as patients in psychiatric institutions. Some 30 texts include general discussions of the art of the mentally ill, critical appraisals of the oeuvres of featured artists and examinations of such topics as the renowned collection of outsider art assembled in the early 1920s by German psychotherapist Hans Prinzhorn and Austrian painter Arnulf Rainer's collaborative work with members of the Art Brut-oriented Gugging group.
