An in-depth study of the formation and international dissemination of a Constructivist-inspired movement founded in Buenos Aires in 1946 by Uruguayan painter Carmelo Arden Quin and Argentine sculptor Gyula Kosice, this catalogue showcases some 150 geometric abstract paintings, sculptures and reliefs produced over the past five decades by more than 50 artists associated with the Madi group, many of the often vibrantly colored pieces incorporating irregularly shaped supports or kinetic elements. Augmented by a detailed chronology of the Madi movement and a selection of manifestos and other writings by featured artists, thirteen essays discuss the Latin American origins of the Madi aesthetic, its exportation to Paris in the 1950s and its contemporary manifestations in Argentina, France, Belgium, Hungary, Italy, Spain and the United States.
