A substantial study of the remarkable flowering of art and culture in Dresden and Warsaw during the reigns of Frederick Augustus I and Frederick Augustus II as electors of Saxony and kings of Poland, this catalogue documents an exhibition of some 850 objects associated with the union of Saxon and Polish states from 1697 to 1763, including paintings, sculptures and prints by such artists as Bernardo Bellotto, Louis de Silvestre, Anton Graff, Rosalba Carriera and Balthasar Permoser; architectural drawings; ceramics, textiles, metalwork, glass and other decorative pieces; coins and metals; and arms and armor. Excellent reproductions and individual discussions of most of the exhibited works are accompanied by more than 30 essays examining such topics as the political origins of the Saxon-Polish union, the monetary systems of 18th-century Saxony and Poland, the achievements of court portrait painters under Frederick Augustus I and II, the character of late Baroque architecture in Dresden, and contemporary regional trends in music, theater and literature.
