ROBERT WILSON: STEEL VELVET. Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker. Museum Villa Stuck, Munich, 1997. Published in association with Prestel-Verlag, Munich. 104 pp. with 83 ills. (47 col.). 29 x 25 cm. ISBN 3791319256 Bilingual in English and German (captions in English only).
Showcases an elaborate recent site-specific installation created by renowned American artist and avant-garde theater director Wilson (b. 1941) as a tribute to German Symbolist painter Franz von Stuck (1863-1928), the work consisting of twelve sound-and light-enhanced sculptural tableaux installed in the rooms of Stuck's luxuriously decorated turn-of-the-century mansion. Two critical essays and excerpts from an interview with Wilson accompany extensive photographic documentation of the featured project and detailed commentaries on each of its component environments, which incorporate sculptures of human figures and mythological creatures, large-scale drawings and photographic images, and other diverse elements to evoke motifs from Stuck's art works and scenes from his life.
