Surveying the individualistic oeuvre of a Cuban-born American artist whose performance-oriented earth and body works, sculptural objects and drawings frequently explore issues of gender, identity and cultural displacement, this catalogue illustrates some 140 works produced by Mendieta (1948-1985) over the course of her brief career that range from enigmatic actions in which the artist enacts masochistic rituals to site-specific installations composed of earthen silhouettes of herself that suggest pre-Columbian mythic figures. A selection of Mendieta's writings and a reminiscence by her sister augment four critical essays examining the psychological, spiritual and feminist concerns informing the artist's work.
