Accompanying the first major exhibition to focus on the material culture of the Alamanni, the Germanic tribal people who inhabited southern Germany and much of Switzerland during the early Christian era, this catalogue features extensive pictorial documentation of recent archaeological excavations of Alamanni settlements and burial sites along with illustrations of hundreds of artifacts and art works dating from the third to the ninth century, including ceramic vessels, gold jewelry, glass, weapons, coins and manuscripts. More than 50 essays examine the history and cultural traditions of the Alamanni from their early conflicts with the Romans to their liquidation by the Carolingians in the mid-eighth century, including discussions of such topics as the conventions of dress among the Alamanni under Frankish rule, their methods of smithery, weaving and woodworking, their development of runic writing systems and their pagan and Christian funerary customs.
