RUDOLF SCHLICHTER: GEMALDE, AQUARELLE, ZEICHNUNGEN. Dirk Heisserer et al. Kunsthalle, Tubingen, 1997. Organized in association with Von der Heydt-Museum, Wuppertal, and Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. Published by Klinkhardt & Biermann Verlagsbuchhandlung GmbH, Munich. 310 pp. with 248 ills. (78 col.). 32 x 24 cm. LC 98-135941 ISBN 3781404099 In German.
Reviewing the career of a German painter whose violently satirical works reflect the influence of Grosz and Dix, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of some 30 oils and 150 drawings and watercolors produced by Schlichter (1890-1955) from 1912 to 1955, including many striking portraits and provocative, often erotically charged narrative images that range from studies of apocalyptic fantasies and "Wild West" scenes to depictions of the social deptavities of life in Weimar Germany. Supplemented by a critical anthology, a detailed biographical chronology incorporating numerous excerpts from Schlichter's writings and commentaries on most of the exhibited works, five essays include a discussion of the artist's links with the Dadaist and Neue Sachlichkeit movements, examinations of his portraiture and landscapes, and an assessment of his late surrealistic work.
