THE SEARCH FOR THE SPIRIT: GENERAL IDEA, 1968-1975. Fern Bayer et al. Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 1997. 144 pp. with 174 ills. 28 x 21 cm. LC 98-171320 ISBN 1895235510 In English.
A well-illustrated study of the conceptually oriented early work of General Idea, an acclaimed Canadian artists' collective composed of Jorge Zontal (Slobodan Saia-Levy, 1944-1994), Felix Partz (Ronald Gabe, 1945-1994), and AA Bronson (Michael Tims, b. 1946), this catalogue presents pictorial documentation of a diverse array of works dating from 1968 to 1975 that include elaborately staged performance events conceived as parodies of beauty pageants, photo-based installations and films exploring issues of identity and gender, postcard-like collages that used the mail as a distribution system and editions of FILE, a provocative arts-related periodical modeled on Life magazine. A text by Bronson augments three essays discussing the origins and influences of General Idea and examining in detail the group's major early projects.
