A scholarly study of the remarkable flowering of artistic and intellectual life in Prague during the reign of Hapsburg emperor Rudolf II from 1576 to 1612, this massive catalogue documents with small reproductions and concise descriptions more than 1500 objects illustrating the cultural milieux of the ruler's court and his adopted capital, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints by such artists as Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Bartholomeus Spranger, Hans von Aachen, Adriaen de Vries and Roelant Savery; a vast array of decorative pieces in metal, ceramic and glass; documents and manuscripts; architectural designs; and scientific and musical instruments. Thirty wide-ranging essays discuss such topics as the character of Rudolf's Kunstkammer and his diverse interests as a patron of the arts and sciences, the achievements of court artists in the field of natural history illustration, the Italian and Spanish influences on Czech architecture of the period, the rise of a prosperous cosmopolitan society in Prague, and the early development of printing and publishing in the city.
