GEORGES DE LA TOUR. Jean-Pierre Cuzin et al. Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, 1997. Organized and published by Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 320 pp. with 264 ills. (115 col.). 31 x 23 cm. LC 98-106654 ISBN 2711835928 In French.
Documenting an expanded version of the 1996 La Tour exhibition mounted in Washington and Fort Worth (Georges de La Tour and His World, Worldwide 25787), this catalogue showcases 41 canvases by the renowned French artist (1593-1652) -- 26 of which appeared in the American show -- along with more than 30 copies after his paintings, which include many dramatically lit depictions of nocturnal religious and genre scenes. Fine reproductions and individual analyses of the paintings are prefaced by two essays detailing advances in La Tour scholarship since the last major exhibition of his work in 1972 and a text (also published in the American catalogue) investigating the influence of Netherlandish and French artists on the formation of La Tour's distinctive style.
