CESAR. Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, 1997. Published in association with Editions Gallimard, Paris, and Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 272 pp. with 271 ills. (45 col.). 27 x 23 cm. LC 97-210932 ISBN 2070115577 In French.
Traces the progression of Cesar's celebrated oeuvre through a well-illustrated presentation of more than 150 works produced by the French sculptor (Cesar Baldaccini, b. 1921) from 1954 to 1996, including animal and human figures constructed of fragments of scrap metal; monolithic sculptures composed of hydraulically crushed cars, boxes and other objects and materials; evocative organic forms fashioned of expanding polyurethane foam; and self-portrait assemblages and castings. An interview with Cesar and a detailed biographical chronology augment four critical essays discussing the artist's welded sculptures of the 1950s, the influence of his innovative compression and expansion pieces, and a series of still-life reliefs he created in 1990 as an homage to Italian painter Giorgio Morandi.
